What is a ladder tournament (aka pyramid tournament) in tennis?

A tennis ladder league is a system for ranking a group of tennis players. In this league, all players are ranked in a ladder, one on top of the other and then in a shape of a pyramid. Players challenge each other. This is a competition that allows tennis players to move up strategically and down the ladder according to their match wins.

If a player lower down the ladder beats a higher placed player, they change places – the lower, winning player moving up the ladder. The player who reaches the top of the ladder/pyramid and remains in that spot is declared the winner.

How will the initial ladder ranking be determined?

  • Registered players will play a competitive Round Robin (everyone plays against each other 1 match) - 10 point tie break (10min limit), first to 10 wins (or when time runs out, whichever is first) - FORMAT MAY CHANGE DEPENDING ON NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS
  • The winner has 10 points the loser’s won games counts as points; eg; ( 10-4 the loser has 4 points)
  • Players must organize themselves on court with hydration/hygiene/scoring..no umpires  - STX “Astride”, offers the balls for this Initiating Start of the Ladder plus entire club facilities/water/coffee and snacks
  • Start: Wednesday, 21 February at  8:30am (arrive at 8am to get full group orientation, ask/answer questions, take a group photo). Finish: 4pm
  • Depending on total players on Wednesday morning, each player knows how many matches to play. From this format we can make the ladder and you receive your ranking - After Wednesday’s start and the ladder positions are announced you may start challenging other players
  • Can't stay for the Round Robin? Those players will be ranked in the order they registered, so register early!
  • First 10 players to register and pay recieve a sleeve of Wilson Trinity balls. These balls last 4x longer than traditional balls and are not sold in Vietnam

RULES

  • You may challenge players ranked higher than you in the ladder who are within the same row or directly above you and to your right on the pyramid
  • You may only commit to 1 match at any time, you may challenge or accept another match only after your current match has been played (this prevents outstanding challenges from accumulating)
  • If the challenge is successful, you and your opponent will switch spots on the ladder
  • If challenged, you will have 2 days (48 hours) to "Accept" or "Deny" the challenge or the challenge will be considered a "forfeit" and the challenger will be granted the win
  • By accepting a challenge, you agree to play the challenge match within 07 days after the date of acceptance. When a date and time is agreed, the challenger is responsible for reserving the court time
  • If you cannot play within 07 days, simply "Deny" the challenge and the challenger will be rewarded the win and can move on
  • Please email office@tennisxperience.com or astride@tennisxperience.com if you have any questions

Note: STX may alter the rules throughout the tournament, as needed

ACTUAL PLAY

  • BALLS - We will be using Wilson US Open balls for this tournament. Each player brings a NEW can of balls - for clarity - new tennis balls aren't tennis balls that were opened the day before, the week before, they must be opened in front of your opponent. The winner of the match takes the unopened can of balls, loser takes home the opened can of balls
  • SCORING A GAME - best of 3 sets (with ad), 6-6 play a 7 point tiebreak. Third set play 10 point tie break (no full third set)
  • IF COURT TIME EXPIRES - and you haven't finished, but court is still available after, continue the match until there is a winner
  • IF COURT TIME EXPIRES - and the court is no longer available, who won more games? That's the winner
  • WHAT HAPPENS IN A TIE? The higher ranked player gets the win
  • WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE TO LEAVE A MATCH BEFORE IT IS OVER? The person that has to leave forfeits the match (even if they were up) and the other player is awarded the win
  • FORFEITS – if you forfeit three (3) matches in a row you will be dropped (3) additional spots
  • BE ON TIME - arrive at your match 15 minutes before you match and start warming up if there is a court available. Start your match at the booked time. If a court is not available for you to warm up early, warm up when a court frees up, start your match 15 min past the booked time
  • LATE FOR MATCH - if a player is late 15min or more, they automatically forfeit and lose the match

SCORING

ENTERING SCORES - Challenger updates the WhatsApp group with the match results and enters the scores on the shared excel sheet. A link will be provided later. Please do this immediately after play is complete as well as physically repositioning your name on the ladder in the tennis club

TEMPORARY LEAVE POLICY

- LEAVING/RETURNING - You may take a temporary leave at any time, but PLEASE send us an email with the subject line saying “Temporary Leave” and include in the body of the email what is your rank at the time you are taking leave. When ready to return, you must request the Administrator to put you back on the ladder. When doing so, forward that same email you sent us when you put yourself on leave.

- POSITIONING - Your positioning upon returning to the ladder will be based on where you were when you left and how long you were on leave. If your leave was for 15-21 days you will drop 1 rung, 22-28 days 2 rungs, 29-35 days 3 rings. You will drop 1 rung for each week additional week you are away.

LATE REGISTRANTS

Players joining the ladder after the season begins will be placed at the bottom of the ladder. Registration for the ladder closes on March 31st. Ms. Astride Robinson may use her discretion on initial positioning if she feels that it is warranted

A NOTE FROM ASTRIDE

Our aim is to keep participation in the ladder fun, friendly and fair. We have the right to change rules at any time if we believe it's in the best interest of the spirit of the ladder. We want players to stay active and engaged. Everybody's busy - but if you ignore challenges, don't make an effort to play, it's a bummer for everyone else. Tennis is fun. This tennis community is passionate. Take this opportunity to play a lot of matches, improve your game and have fun!
